Music

Our congregation, led by our choir, the St John Payne Singers, embraces music as a key part of our regular services. On Sundays our 10.45 Missa Cantata includes seasonally appropriate sung Mass settings, propers and psalms. During Advent and Lent, as well as on feast days, we embrace traditional Latin Gregorian chant settings. Music plays an important role at feast day services and, albeit on a smaller scale, across our other Sunday services.

Together we are on a journey of musical development focused on enhancing our worship. Young and old, our singers are all members of our congregation, many of whom had not sung before joining our choir. To further our musical development we prepare choral anthems weekly, stretching our abilities where we can to enhance the music in our services.

St John Payne Singers

Our small group of dedicated choir members meet weekly to practise anthems, hymns, psalms and other elements of the Mass in new and varied settings. We also prepare material for performance at other Church social events through the year. Most recently, in June 2026 we performed Horovitz and Flanders’ musical cantata ‘Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo’ as part of the Church’s summer fayre. We are currently preparing for A Celebration of Music and Light, our Christmas musical afternoon to be held on Saturday 12 December at the Church.

All are welcome to join our choir. We rehearse in the Church Hall on Saturday mornings: children from 10.00am to 11.15am, and adults from 11.15am to 12.30pm.
